Please introduce yourself!
Hey All, I’m Sera Mason, From Cape Town South Africa. You’ll find me kiting everywhere in South Africa. From Cape Point to Langebaan, or up our beautiful East Coast.
Why, and at what age did you get into kiting?
I’ve been kiting unassisted from the age of 7 years old. My dad says the first time I went kitesurfing was with him at the age of 18 Months. Having a father that is passionate about kitesurfing I didn’t have too much choice in whether I was going to kite or not. By proximity, I was always going to pick up a bar and start to kite at some stage. I was 6 years old when I asked my dad for my first Kite.
That’s awesome. What about kiting do you enjoy most?
I love getting to share the water with my dad and boosting as high as I can.
Describe the absolute perfect dream session to us.
My dream session is Hot weather, Tropical water, Consistent 24knts, and riding in a bikini. Although I live in Cape Town where the wind is great, it’s always super strong and the water is freezing. One day, when I’m big, I will travel to Brazil or an Island like Mauritius for a tropical warm season.
What gear are you riding and what’s your favorite size?
My quiver of kites are 5m, 6m, 10m with a 133 Kevpro. Each kite offers me an opportunity to try different things. My 10m I’ll ride more freestyle (Im learning how to do a handle pass). 7m is great for when I’m practicing my Loops and back Loops and new variations of big-air. 5m is when I spend most of my time boosting and trying bigger kiteloops, perfect for strong 30knt days.
What do you do on a day without wind?
None windy days…. mmmm. We spend a lot of time at the beach or around water doing water activities. If there no wind I will ride cable park or we take the boat out and wakeboard. I also love skateboarding with my friends in my neighborhood.
What can people expect to see from you in the future?
I’m pretty chilled about the future and so are my parents. We’re going to take it as it comes. It’s nice that there’s no pressure on me and this allows me the opportunity to explore everything. If I choose to go “pro” I know I have the support from both my mom and dad, but, being 11 years old I have a lot of time to think about my future and enjoy my sport with the people I love the most.
