Please introduce yourself
My name is Boy-Ole Diedrichsen and I was born and raised on Germany’s northernmost island Sylt located in the Northern Sea. That’s my home spot and where you can find me on the water all year around.
Why, and at what age did you get into kiting?
Actually, I only started kiting when I was 16 years old which from today’s perspective is strange as I had these amazing conditions in front of my house for my whole childhood. My father who’s an old windsurfer motivated me to do the course together with him and my brother.
What about kiting do you enjoy most?
For me, kitesurfing is a form of self-expression. My whole life is based around this sport and my mind is always busy thinking about new spots, tricks, and the best winds. But I also enjoy the diverse options you have. So kitefoiling, freestyle, kitesurfing, and now also wingfoiling definitely adds to the experience. But still, nothing beats the excitement you feel before a really strong Big-Air session battling it out against mother nature.
Describe the absolute perfect dream session to us.
Uh that’s easy. Sunny and warm weather, 3/2mm wetsuit, 35knts, left foot forward kickers, and no crowd in your way. So basically a really good day in Cape Town. I would go for some big kiteloop boardoffs and the standard kiteloop rotations and maybe finally nail the boogieloop boardoff for the first time. I really enjoy kiting together with my girlfriend but I also get extremely excited to kite with people who are way better than myself and who help me push my own limits.
What gear are you riding and what’s your favorite size?
I’m riding the 136cm KevPro and my favorite kite size still is my 9m Supermodel HTF. Even though I really learned to enjoy my 8m for these stronger days and easy Big-Air progression. In my opinion, a good 12m day still is perfect from time to time to train all the basics like board offs and rotations for the stronger days.
What do you do on a day without wind?
I’m usually always busy as besides my academic studies I help out on my parents’ farm but also enjoy road-cycling together with my girlfriend or fishing in the summertime.
What can people expect to see from you in the future?
I’m trying to get more into the competitive side of kiteboarding. Therefore I will try to participate in as many national competitions as possible but I also enjoy talking to people on demo events. Another activity I really enjoy is capturing others’ kiteboarding action. So I’m also hoping to produce even more quality videos and pictures in the future.
